Overview

ESCAC’s Master in Film Directing provides students with the knowledge and techniques required to direct fictional audiovisual works.

It is a specialized programme where students will learn and perform the functions of the director throughout the pre-production, production, and post-production phases, through practical exercises and the creation of original short films.

This practical framework will be complemented by masterclasses and seminars delivered by active industry professionals.

Methodology

Our pedagogical system is firmly rooted in learning-by-doing. We aim for students to learn through active creation, guided by leading industry professionals, and to develop transversal skills while acquiring the knowledge and tools needed to pursue a professional career in any field of content creation. 

Within this master’s programme, students will gain hands-on experience while integrating the conceptual and technical principles of film directing.

The programme modules are structured into four main groups: 

  • PROJECTS
    • A set of sessions focused on the pre-production, production and completion of the main projects of the Master’s programme.
  • SPECIALIZED SEMINARS
    • A set of predominantly theoretical classes that, guided by industry professionals, explore specific thematic areas related to the discipline of the programme in depth.
  • WORKSHOPS
    • A set of practical classes with a concrete production objective, where students apply the theoretical and technical knowledge acquired in other subjects.
  • MASTERCLASSES
    • One or two-day sessions involving dialogue with renowned industry professionals related to the aims of the programme, allowing students to learn from their experience.

Applicant Profile

  • University graduates with degrees related to the audiovisual field, possessing practical experience in the development and shooting of audiovisual projects.
  • Students holding a Higher Vocational Training Certificate (HND equivalent) in audiovisual project realization and live events, or equivalent.
  • Professionals with proven experience in the audiovisual sector wishing to expand their skill set beyond their current discipline.
  • Professionals in the film or audiovisual sector seeking to deepen their understanding of film directing.

Admission

To apply for this master’s programme, the following materials must be submitted:

  • Directing Portfolio.
  • Video pitch (max. 3 minutes).
  • CV / Resume.

Additionally, the applicant must demonstrate at least one of the following achievements:

  • Have directed at least one narrative short film.
  • Have directed two or more professional audiovisual works (such as music videos, commercials, or fashion films).
  • Provide documented experience as a member of the directing department (script supervisor or assistant director) on two or more professional productions.
  • Provide documented experience as a Head of Department (cinematography, production design, editing, etc.) on professional productions; in this case, the personal statement must justify the candidate’s interest in transitioning to directing.
  • Furthermore, a solid command of the fundamentals of screenwriting is essential.
  • Basic proficiency in editing software such as Adobe Premiere, Avid, or Final Cut is required to edit projects and practical exercises.

In cases where further clarification is needed to make a final admission decision, the programme directors will conduct an online interview with the candidate.
