Overview
The Master in Film Directing provides students with the knowledge and techniques required to direct fictional audiovisual works in any format.
Students will learn and carry out the functions of the director, as well as those of the rest of the team, throughout the processes of pre-production, shooting and post-production.Â
They will also acquire a comprehensive understanding of the roles within a production team – such as cinematographer, art director, editor, sound designer, among others – through the development of guided practical exercises and self-authored short films. This training is complemented by masterclasses delivered by industry professionals.Â
Graduation Short FilmsÂ
At the end of the Master’s programme, students may individually or collectively present short film projects in a pitching session. This session is preceded by script tutoring sessions during the month following the end of the academic period. Based on quality criteria and subject to selection by a panel, two of these projects will be produced by ESCAC Films, according to a schedule and budget adapted to the nature of each proposal.
Objectives and Skills
Upon completion of the Master’s programme, students will be able to:
- Understand and utilize the mechanisms of audiovisual language to tell stories.
- Carry out all the tasks associated with the role of the director in the creation of an audiovisual work: planning, executing and supervising the different production processes.Â
- Understand and perform the duties of the other members of the directing department.
- Acquire sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge of the roles of the different departments involved in audiovisual production (cinematography, production design, editing, sound, etc.).Â
- Work collaboratively in the creation of an audiovisual work, cooperating with others and leading a shared project.Â
- Demonstrate maturity and analytical rigor in the self-assessment of their work, both individually and as part of a team.
Applicant Profile
Graduates in Audiovisual Communication, Fine Arts, or other university-level degrees related to the audiovisual field, with practical experience in the development and shooting of audiovisual projects.
Students from film schools or other artistic disciplines.
Students holding a Higher Vocational Training Certificate (HND equivalent) in audiovisual project realization and live events, or equivalent.
Professionals with proven experience in the audiovisual sector seeking to make a career switch or update their skills.
Professionals in the film or audiovisual sector wishing to deepen their knowledge of directing.
Admissions
Applicants to the programme must pass a selection process and meet the administrative requirements to study in Spain.
The school does not require an official English proficiency certificate, however, a good command of both spoken and written English is expected.Â
Candidates for the Master in Film Directing must submit a directing portfolio, a video pitch, a 600-word personal statement, and a CV resume, in addition to:
- At least one narrative short film.
- Two or more professional audiovisual pieces (music videos, commercials, fashion films, etc.) as a director, or
- Proven experience as a member of the directing department (script supervisor, assistant director) on two or more professional productions, or
- Proven experience as a Head of Department (cinematography, production design, editing, etc.) on professional productions, and include the reason for transitioning to directing in the personal statement.
Applicants must also have a basic understanding of screenwriting fundamentals.
A basic level of proficiency in Adobe Premiere, Avid or Final Cut is required in order to edit projects and exercises.
It is recommended that applicants requiring a student visa apply during the November or March application rounds.
